Members of DVR-6 come from all walks of life but are primarily drawn from the veteran community. Individuals interested in DVR-6 must be highly motivated to aid others at some risk to their comfort and safety. Rescue operations take place in rugged and often extreme conditions and environments. Distressed veterans fleeing into the backcountry are often armed, unpredictable and volatile. Since the goal of DVR-6 is to save lives, not end them, DVR-6 does not deploy with or rely on firearms for protection. Instead, members are expected to rely on cover and concealment, stealth, teamwork, superior backcountry knowledge and tactics, rapport building techniques and non-lethal combatives to avoid harm.
